Water Fun!

For several years now, we have had a fish named Michaela. Actually, she's a girl -- she just swims like a fish! Michaela spends much of her summers at our neighborhood pool as part of the local swim team. She was given the honor of holding the flag for the opening ceremonies of last night's swim meet. She also had great fun giving Mom and Dad a real fright at the meet. She's been wanting to learn to do a flip turn at the halfway point of her 50 meter race but hadn't learned how yet -- or so we thought. So in the midst of her backstroke race, she rolls to her tummy. We thought she was going to be disqualified -- until she proceeded to execute a perfect flip turn! Not only did she conquer the tricky turn, but she managed to shave more than 2 1/2 seconds off her best time ever!
Timmy also has big water news. He's been wanting to learn to swim for a while now, but since he has absolutely refused to let his head get wet (ever!), we've figured it was most likely still a ways off. Then, out of the clear blue, while visiting the cousins on our trip to the 'boro last week, he jumps off the side of the pool, goes all the way under, comes up sputtering, and decides it is great fun! So today we decided it was a perfect pool day (hot and muggy!), so off we went. I had decided to try Timmy with arm floaties instead of his large swim vest. In we jumped, away he swam (with the floats on), and then he declared "I can swim!" Not quite, I replied, you still have arm floats on. But when he insisted that he could, I decided to give him a little taste of swimming by letting some of the air out of the arm floats. When he managed that with no trouble, I thought "Why not? Let's give it a try!" Off came the arm floats, and off he swam. By a stroke of luck, I happened to have my camera in the car and I was able to capture this picture. Fish #2 has arrived!

Nature Moment

We had a fun nature moment today. Actually, living out in the "country" we have them most days. They usually involve deer, bunnies, or a wide variety of cool birds -- all creatures we usually can't catch. But today we did manage to capture a turtle. We can move faster than they can (though you may be surprised at how fast they can move!). "Charlie," as Timmy named him, made a brief appearance in the house. The kids had high hopes of domesticating him, but Buddy was quite concerned about this intruder, and from the sounds of his fierce barking he was fully prepared to protect us all from the dangers of wild turtles. Interesting nature fact: turtles apparently have an impressive bladder reservoir, as we discovered immediately after this picture. Needless to say, Charlie was quickly returned to his natural surroundings!

Injury Alert!

I kn0w, I've been absent for some time... Believe it or n0t, I really do have a (kind-if) good excuse. OK, not a really great excuse. But I'll just have to come to terms with the fact that I'm not as good at this as Di is! Seriously though, on Wednesday, while I was innocently cleaning up after dinner, there was an unfortunate incident involving a fork tine and my thumb. Trust me, you don't want further details. Suffice it to say that the pain was extreme, and any sort of contact with my thumb was (and is) excruciating. My doc told me that it would probably continue to worsen for the first 48-72 hrs, and then should begin to improve. She's a smart lady -- it did seem to turn a corner today. The swelling is down, the heat is down, and as long as I don't let anything touch my thumb (and I remember my Advil dose), the throbbing is almost gone. This is the first day I've been willing to attempt to type, as up to this point even flexing my thumb (which seems to happen even when you type using only pointer fingers!) was quite uncomfortable. So I blame all typos on my injury and am accepting sympathy gifts. :-)
